REACHING GOLD
In order for an event or a person to reach "Gold" level, needed qualities
are: excellent coordination, something people want, able to attract a
crowd, deliver good customer service, and is fun to attend.
In May, Olivet Church was 109 years old. Over the years many fundraisers
were created by folks who wanted to have a church in Easton's west ward
and plan events to keep the church financially afloat.
Bi-annual Rummage Sales fit the bill. They were and are stand out "ringers"
that deserve to be honored.
These on-going sales are very popular. Don't miss our fall sale:
Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18. Last day is also BAG DAY!
As usual tables are to be set up early - -October 6 and October
7. Then 11 days of sorting begins.
The sale gathers members and friends to do God's work,-that of helping
each other, and to reach out to our neighbors, many of whom have very
low incomes.
In digging through records and speaking to ladies of the church, the
actual beginning of rummage sales is difficult to pin point. We're all
quite sure the sale began very early in church history.
What we think we do know: Eleanor Gardner guesstimated her Aunt Ida Hufnagel
was coordinator early on, records indicate it could've been as early as
1915. Cora Fritts led the event, may-be as early as 1928, and Winnie Giardiniere,
having found Olivet in 1941 worked the sales and jumped in as coordinator
in the early 80s. Other leaders were Ruth Gafford, Hazel Edelman, Arlene
Wamsley, Barbara Boyd, Florence Fritts, Marjorie Parks, Gerry and Jake
Paul and Gerry and Bob Crawford.
Later Pat Kemmerer and Eleanor Gardner created sales for a good number
of years, and now sisters Joan Dicker and Kay Davis are currently at the
helm.
Almost all ladies of the church since day one participated in some way.
Let's not forget the men of the church who support the gals each and
every year.
Exciting public life awards, a mark of high honor, are awarded in public
life to deserving folks. Honors such as Trophies, Emmys, Oscars, Tonys,
and Olympic Medals.
Therefore, all Rummage Sales qualify for GOLD MEDALS, as well as the
leadership and helpers.
REMEMBER! Each sale is a "GOD SEND" to a great many folks and to Olivet
Church!
